Vacant homes in City of Atlanta

Following in the footsteps of DeKalb County, the City of Atlanta adopted an ordinance that targets vacant homes in the city. The new ordinance requires owners of any vacant residential building or dwelling to register with the Office of Code Enforcement.

Vacant properties must be registered within 30 days after the building becomes vacant. The cost is $100 per property and the registration is good for 12 months. If at renewal the structure is not up to Code then the renewal fee will be $250.

The ordinance does apply to homeowners that have their home on the market but it is vacant. Or landlords that go more than 30 days between tenants.

Atlanta Then & Now

I’ve enjoyed digging in to the history of my home and was lucky enough to meet the son of the man who built my house in 1932. Hearing stories of the history of my home was such a treat and we were happy to get answers to some questions that we had not been able to figure out. Post renovation we invited the family back so they could see the home. I know they were thrilled to see the love that we were putting into their former family home.

Speaking of history, I just came across a must read for Atlantans, theatlanticcities.com just published a really interesting article on Atlanta comparing the city in the years 1871 & 2011. It gives side by side depictions of then and now. Any Atlanta resident is sure to find it an interesting read.

Shred & Tread

November 19th DeKalb County celebrates America Recycles Day with a special event. Shred & Tread Event is hosted by Keep DeKalb Beautiful and encourages county residents to bring paper for shredding and old tires for recycling.

Gather documents that contain personal information and bring them for the shredder. There is a limit of 5 boxes per person. See information on the types of shredding here http://web.co.dekalb.ga.us/beautiful/pdf/2011_11_19Shredding.pdf

In addition, if you have any old tires hanging around or if you have had any dumped illegally on your street you can bring those and for $1.00 they will be recycled. Limit 10 tires per person.
