Pet of the Month

September – Chicken of the Month

Meet ‘Robin’ the hen that turned out to be a rooster. Although we already had 6 baby chicks my oldest daughter really wanted a “fancy” chicken. She got on the computer, did some research & decided that she really wanted a Speckled Sussex. The closest one we could find was in Bowden, GA which is just this side of the Alabama line. I called the farmer & he said he needed to call me back because he needed to check & see if his 1 remaining chick was a pullet (female). He called us back & said, indeed, it’s a girl! Road trip for a chicken! When we went to pick her up, I thought to myself that she looked awfully butch for a girl, but what did I know?! He was the farmer! My oldest promptly named her Robin, & I had to agree, she was very beautiful. As she continued to grow, we noticed she was very bossy & the other girls followed her lead but the other morning when we were greeted with a “cock-a-doodle-doo” we realized our beautiful girl was in fact, a beautiful boy. Sadly, as much as we love the sound of a crowing rooster, I did not think my neighbors would enjoy it as much. I quickly found someone who was really excited to have him, I mean who wouldn’t be?! He was a beautiful man! But, she lived in Carrolton…another road trip for a chicken! So, he is now the king of another roost, with a lot of other lovely ladies to adore him!
